What is the theory test?
Before the road test for a UAE light-vehicle (car) licence, learner drivers have to pass a theory test on traffic rules, road signs and safe driving. It is normally taken after the theory lessons at a licensed driving institute, which arranges the test for you. The rules for booking, fees and retakes are set by each emirate's licensing authority, so check them with your institute.
What the test covers
The questions are based on the knowledge in the Light Vehicle Handbook published by Emirates Driving Company. It has eight chapters and an appendix of road signs:
- Chapter 1: Regulating the Roads — 52 questions on traffic rules, road traffic signs, road markings
- Chapter 2: Inside the City Limits — 44 questions on inside the city limits, using your eyes and other senses, lanes
- Chapter 3: Outside the City Limits — 55 questions on outside city limits, road works, ordinary roads
- Chapter 4: Driving Under Difficult Conditions — 48 questions on driving in sunshine and hot weather, driving safely in the dark, driving in fog
- Chapter 5: Critical Situations — 49 questions on what is the main cause of traffic accidents?, different types of critical situation and accident, the impact of intersection design
- Chapter 6: Driving Behaviour and Road Courtesy — 52 questions on emotional maturity, personality traits and certain types of bad behaviour, the will to learn and the need to learn
- Chapter 7: The Basics – Getting to Know Your Car — 60 questions on before you start: service and maintenance, how it all works: main components and systems, economical driving
- Chapter 8: Safety While Driving — 44 questions on car safety, the natural laws, more about handling different cars
- Road signs appendix — all 153 signs with their meanings
How the questions work
The test is multiple choice and taken on a computer. Many questions include a picture: a road sign, a road marking or a traffic situation at a junction or roundabout. The number of questions, the time limit and the pass mark are set by the licensing authority and can change, so confirm the current format before test day.
The mock exam on this site gives you 35 questions drawn from every chapter, a 30-minute countdown and a pass mark of 26 out of 35. Answers stay hidden until you submit, just like a real exam, and you can review every mistake afterwards.
A study plan that works
- Read a chapter of the handbook, then practise that chapter's questions. Aim to answer at least 80% correctly before moving on.
- Learn the road signs with flashcards. Signs you know move to the back of the deck, so you spend your time on the ones you don't.
- Mix the chapters with the Quick 10 drill once you have covered them all, so you get used to switching topics.
- Take timed mock exams until you pass comfortably several times in a row. Review every wrong answer and read its explanation.
- Revisit your weak spots the day before the test rather than starting anything new.
Tips for test day
- Read the whole question and every option before you answer. Watch for words like not and except.
- For picture questions, look at the whole scene: road markings, other vehicles and signs often decide the answer.
- Right of way at junctions and roundabouts is one of the most tested topics, so practise those categories until they feel automatic.
- If you are unsure, rule out the answers you know are wrong first.
